Bucks Waste Calendar

Buckinghamshire Council used to publish an excellent downloadable calendar showing, in a very clear format, the waste collection dates at your location for the next few months. A while ago however they stopped publishing this version and replaced it with a far less user friendy version.

Their version currently does not show bank holiday adjustments but shows another link to a bank holidays page - this is easy to miss!

The display format used in my version is based on the previous, and excellent design, that was originally used by the council.

The calendar generator also allows for the fact that some locations in Buckinghamshire have their waste collections on different weeks to others. To enable this there are now two alternative versions called "A" and "B" on this site that switch the collection days. You will have to decide which version apples for your location. The Bucks CC waste collection site will help to discover which set applies for you. See Bucks recycling web site/. You will only need to do this once! My calendar includes a link to the page selected which is normally updated each month. If you have been using an early version of the calendar, and retained the download link, it may no longer work. If that is the case please use the table above and reselect the day/round for your area.

Each version of this calendar is published as a separate PDF file that can be downloaded using the links in the table below. Each PDF file has been automically generated from common data making updating and creating PDF versions for each of the collection days very simple. Each PDF file is formatted to print an A5 size calendar page in Landscape orientation. On a printer using A4 paper it will print sidways! This is intended to make it easy to crop the A5 printout from an A4 sheet of paper.

Some technical details for the curious

The basic data about collection days is held in a spreadsheet where the information for the collection day, and adjustments for Bank Holidays for example, are automatically applied. The collection day is selected by simply click on the day cell and using the pull-down list. The choice of round A or B is done in a simlar manner. The spreadsheet is then updated for that normal collecton day, with automatic adjustments if there is a holiday that week affecting collections. Rules have been added to make adjustments for Christmas/New Year and Easter but these are povisional and may need to be changed when the council publish their version of the calendar.

The data is formatted to make it easy to follow and is published as a PDF file. The collection day is entered as a parameter in a single cell in the spreadsheet and the resulting data will be published as a separate PDF calendar file. Just select your normal day from the selection list. The original council website automated this from a postcode but unfortunateky it is not fesible to implement that feature.

There is also a button that will automatically select each day, and each round associate with that day, and generate each PDF file automatically.

The calendars display data for six months but I anticipate updating the PDF calendar files more frequently than that. Creating each PDF file is a simple process and takes just a minute or two to do all of them. There is a button provided to do this automatically.

The spreadsheet has been created, and is updated, using the "free" (actually donationware), and strongly recommended, LibreOffice Calc spreadsheet program. It is also likely to also work with Excel but I am unable to test that - my copy is too old! Please send me an email if you would like a copy of the current spreadsheet.
